Shail Shrestha, president of ‘Kathmandu Cycle City 2020’, a
youth network working for the promotion and advocacy of bicycle and bicycle friendly
infrastructures, handed over a bicycle (Jomsom Bike) to the Prime Minister Dr.
Baburam Bhattarai today on the occasion of Environment Day at a program by
Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology held at Nepal Academy Hall,
Kamaladi.
They bicycle was bought from the fund collected from
participant cyclists of Mega Cycle Rally conducted on April 6, 2012 in
association with Clean Energy Nepal, Nepal Unites, World Cyclist's Foundation
Nepal, Come On Youth Stand Up, Step for Miles, Rotaract Club and Resources
Himalaya.

in Nepal,
by Chain Bikes, which the organizers hope the PM will use after his much
popular Mustang Jeep.
The purpose was to request the PM and all the stakeholders
concerned to work for the betterment and safety of roads and make bicycle
friendly planning which includes dedicated cycle lanes in Kathmandu,
consideration of tax in bicycle and related accessories, programs to encourage
bicycle use and cycle safety and inclusion of cycle in National Transport Policy.

In an effort to draw the attention of policymakers to adopt an environment-friendly lifestyle and formulate necessary policies, a group of young cyclists on Tuesday gifted Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai with a Jomsom Bike.
On the occasion of World Environment Day on Tuesday, Shail Shrestha, president of ‘Kathmandu Cycle City 2020’, a youth network working for promotion and advocacy of bicycle and bicycle-friendly infrastructure, handed over the bicycle to Prime Minister Bhattarai at a programme organised by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology. The bicycle is assembled in Nepal by Chain Bikes.
According to Shrestha, the purpose was to request the prime minister and concerned stakeholders to work for the betterment of roads and to encourage bicycle use and its safety in the national transport policy.
Addressing the programme, Bhatarai stressed the need to move ahead by formulating strategies to implement the 10-point Kathmandu Call for Action made public during the two-day international conference of mountain countries this year.

The Jomsom Bike was assembled in Nepal by the Chain Bikes. The organisers hoped that Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai, who took up Nepal-assembled Mustang jeep for his official use, will use their gift as well.

सरकारको नेतृत्व गरे लगत्तै बिलासी र सुविधाजनक गाडीको सट्टा स्वदेशमै बनेको मुस्ताङ जीप चढ्न थालेका प्रधानमन्त्री डा. बाबुराम भट्टराईले मंगलबार चिटिक्क परेको एउटा साइकल उपहार पाउनुभएको छ । मुस्ताङ जीप चढिरहेका प्रधानमन्त्रीले अब जोमसोम बाइक नामको साइकल पाउनुभएको छ । विश्व वातावरण दिवसको अवसरमा सिंहदरबारमा भएको कार्यक्रममा वातावरण क्षेत्रमा काम गर्ने संघसंस्थाका प्रतिनिधिले प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई साइकल उपहार दिएका हुन् । प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठानमा भएको विशेष कार्यक्रममा काठमाण्डू साइकल सिटी २०२०, क्लिन एयर नेटर्वक नेपाल, स्टेप फर माइल्स्, रोड ट्रायक, साइकलिङ एसोसियसन नेपाल लगायत संस्थाको तर्फबाट प्रधानमन्त्री भट्टराईलाई साइकल दिइएको हो ।
प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई साइकल उपहार दिनको लागि वातावरण क्षेत्रमा काम गर्ने साईकल संस्थाले दुई महिनाअघि चन्दा संकलन गरेका थिए । ‘अप्रिल ६ मा हामीले काठमाडौंमा गरेको साइकल यात्राको क्रममा चन्दा उठाएका थियौं, त्यसैबाट प्रधानमन्त्रीको लागि साइकल किनेर दिएका हौं’ काठमाण्डू साइकल सिटी २०२० का अध्यक्ष शैल श्रेष्ठले जानकारी दिनुभयो । उहाँका अनुसार आधुनिक मोडलको साइकललाई झण्डै २० हजार रुपैंया परेको छ । साइकलसँगै प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई हेलमेट पनि दिइएको छ ।
राजधानीमा दिनप्रतिदिन वातावरण प्रदुषण भैरहेकाले साइकल प्रयोगको महत्व बढाउन र सडकमा साइकल लेन बनाउन माग गर्दै सांकेतिक रुपमा प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई साइकल उपहार दिइएको ती संघसंस्थाका प्रतिनिधिको भनाई छ ।
‘राजधानीभित्र साइकलबाट सजिलै गन्तव्यमा पुग्न सकिन्छ, साइकलको प्रयोग बढ्यो भने यसले वातावरण स्वच्छ राख्न पनि सहयोग पुर्याउँछ, अहिले साइकलको प्रयोगकर्ता बढेकाले उनीहरुलाई थप अभिप्रेरित गर्न सरकारले सहयोग गर्न जरुरी छ’ काठमाण्डू साइकल सिटीकी सम्बृद्धी ढकालले भन्नुभयो -’सडकमा साइकल लेन भएमा यसले साइकल प्रयोगकर्तालाई सजिलो, सहज र सुरक्षित बनाउँछ ।’ साइकल हस्तान्तरण कार्यक्रममा पनि उनीहरुले प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई यसबारे ध्यानाकर्षण गराए । जवाफमा प्रधानमन्त्रीले स्वच्छ वातावरण र साइकलको प्रयोगलाई बढावा दिन सरकारकाले आवश्यक सहयोग गर्ने आश्वासन दिनुभयो ।
साइकल चढ्लान त प्रधानमन्त्रीले ?
चिटिक्क परेको साइकल पाएका प्रधानमन्त्री भट्टराईले एकछिन आफैंले साइकल डोहोर्याउनुभयो । मुख्य सचिव लगायत अरुले दंग परेर ताली बजाए । प्रधानमन्त्री पनि मुस्कुराउँदै एकछिन साइकल समाएरै बस्नुभयो । तर साइकल खेलाएर मात्र डुल्ने फुर्सद प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई किन हुन्थ्यो । त्यसपछि सहयोगीलाई साइकल थन्क्याए । ‘अब बालुवाटारमै लगेर राखिन्छ’ प्रधानमन्त्रीका एक सहयोगीले भने ।
प्रधानमन्त्रीले साइकल चढ्नुहुन्छ त भन्ने हाम्रो प्रश्नमा उनले भने -’साइकल चढेर हिंड्ने फुर्सद त किन हुन्थ्यो र ? यो त वातावरण दिवसको अवसरमा पाएको साँकेतिक उपहार मात्र हो । अब बालुवाटारमा राखेपछि कसकसले चढ्छन् हेरौं न ।’
जे होस् मुस्ताङ जीप चढिरहेका प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई अब जोमसोम बाइक उपहार आइलागेको छ । हेरौं प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई मुस्ताङ छाडेर जोमसोम चढ्ने फुर्सद कतिसम्म मिल्ने हो ?

विश्व वातावरण दिवसको अवसरमा प्रधानमन्त्री डा.बाबुराम भट्टराईलाई साइकल उपहार दिइएको छ ।
काठमाडौं सफा राख्नको लागि साइकल मैत्री शहरको रुपमा विकास गर्न माग गर्दै काठमाडौं साइकल सिटी, क्लिन एयर नेटवर्क नेपाल, स्टेप फर माइल्स्, रोड ट्रयाक, साइक्लिङ एसोसियसन नेपाल लगायत संस्थाले प्रधानमन्त्री भट्टराईलाई सँयुक्त रुपमा साइकल उपहार दिएका हुन् ।
साइकल चलाउँदा स्वास्थ्य राम्रो हुने र वातावरण स्वच्छ राख्न सकिने भएकाले साइकलको प्रयोग गर्न आयोजकले आग्रह गरेका छन् । आयोजकले काठमाडौंमा बिहान साइकल ¥याली समेत गरेका थिए ।
